My son just completed his High School track season.
In California there is only one HS state meet.
In Wisconsin there are three, one for each division; division 1,2,3.

As a hurdler in his final meet this week just short of the State Meet he ran
110 meter high hurdles in 14.71 seconds wind legal(36th best in CA) and
300 meter hurdles in 38.83 seconds(29th best in CA).

If he was in Wisconsin I think his preliminary times and final times would be good enough to be in any of the state finals races in Wisconsin.

I am looking forward to the results of the WI state finals to see how he compares to the best in America's Dairyland. Here is a link to this weekend's meet:

As parents we always want to brag on our kids.

This is going way back, but in 1961, long before we went to metric measurements, I ran the 120 highs and 180 lows for Whitefish Bay HS. At the Wisconsin State meet I ran the best times I'd ever run in both, and finished out of the money to my teammate Tom Dakin. I did the highs in 14.8 and lows in 19.7
Todays 110 meter highs are the best equivelent....120 yards is 109.73 meters.
Good luck to your son and may he be clipping the timber for years to come.

Well the preliminary heats are in.

    For the 300 Hurdles:
    CA- http://www.sml1.com/recordtiming/cif2007/070601P014.htm

    WI
Boys 300 Meter Hurdles Division 1 Prelims
    1 Zachary Sharkey-Ketner 11 Milw Mrsh/La 38.15
    2 Derek Steinbach 12 Arrowhead 38.67
    3 Pat Bryan 12 Cedarburg 38.83
    4 Eric Bieszk 12 D C Everest 39.09

Boys 300 Meter Hurdles Division 2 Prelims
    1 Adam Hexum 12 Hayward 39.77
    2 Grant Bughman 11 Whitewater 39.87

Boys 300 Meter Hurdles Division 3 Prelims
    1 Keith Martineau 12 Gillett 39.63
    2 Mitch Sebranek 11 Hillsboro 40.27

So in the California State Meet he would have been near the middle of the field. In WI only 2 or 3 division 1 guys would be faster.

    The 110 High Hurdles:

    CA- http://www.sml1.com/recordtiming/cif2007/
About 2/3 back in the pack.

    WI
Boys 110 Meter Hurdles Division 1 Prelims
    1 Luke Bibis 12 Menomonee Fls 14.26
    2 Pat Bryan 12 Cedarburg 14.35
    3 Derek Steinbach 12 Arrowhead 14.60
    4 Eric Merseraw 11 Port Washing 14.75
    5 Marcus Smith 11 W Allis Cent 14.76

Boys 110 Meter Hurdles Division 2 Prelims
    1 Adam Hexum 12 Hayward 14.40
    2 Aaron Karo 12 Amery 15.04

Boys 110 Meter Hurdles Division 3 Prelims
    1 Michael Farr 11 Lutheran 15.00
    2 Keith Martineau 12 Gillett 15.06

In Wisconsin only 3-7 could have been faster if they were all in the same race. He would be in the finals race of any division.

In California HS track they have to advance from League finals to Section finals at their size of school. Then they have a Master's level where all size schools compete and the winners go on to the State Meet.

BTW My son broke and now holds the record in the 300 hurdles in his Section Division II finals.

Minnesota just had their track meet and they divide into 2 categories (large and small school) at their state meet.

Obviously from the times my son would have been in all the finals possibly winning. In the 110 High Hurdles there were two faster and in the 300 Intermediates 3 faster.

BTW in the WI finals in three divisions he could have won and division and in the 300 2 were faster in Division I and in Division II.

Oh, one last piece of information.

My son qualified for the Golden West Track Invitational Meet. Since 1964 over 150 US Olympians have participated in this meet.

Prior athletes of note who have participated in the Golden West:
    James Lofton
    Terry Bradshaw
    Mel Renfro
    Art Monk
    Bob Hayes
    Russ Francis

    Michael Carter
    Marion Jones
    Tommie Smith
    Dwight Stones
    Bob Beamon
    Marty Liquori
    Jim Ryun

The meet is Sunday June 10th. He is doing something dear old dad couldn't.

The Golden West Invitational track Meet. It was a big meet with many states represented. Of the states west of the Mississippi only Minnesota Nebraska and South Dakota were not represented. East of the Misssissippi athletes came from FL, MI, GA, NJ, NY, OH, TN, VA, SC, MD, MA, PA, IL, IN. There were even 2 Canadians from BC.

The standards were high and my son was the 15th best qualifier in the 110 High hurdles and he was also the 15th best qualifier for the 300 meter intermediate hurdles.

The way it was set up the 8 or 9 highest qualifiers were in the A group and the other 2 heats were the B group.

In the 110 High hurdles he was 7th in the B group and 15th overall. He did beat the AA State Champion from TN who was in his heat. With graduation and not in competition for 2 weeks he hadn't had much practice lately.

In the 300 hurdles he was third in the B group and 10th overall. He got a medal. The guy who won his heat was from Miami.

Going through the program I noticed that Qadry Ismail won the 110 High Hurdles in 1988 when he was in High School.

Where I was sitting there were college scouts from Virgina Tech, LSU, and Louisville. It was strange hearing the southern and cajun accents there.

One unusual moment was after one of the races at the winners platform they had in the top 3, students from Alaska, Florida, and Louisiana. It is rare for Alaska and Florida High School Athletes to compete.

Anyway, with good fortune perhaps in a couple of years I can start another thread for his college career.

They had the Girls 400m State Champion from Ohio(Jessica Beard) there. She is #1 in the U.S. She qualified with a 51.63. Your wife will tell you how good a time that is. Look for her at the next Olympic trials.

    http://www.sacbee.com/100/story/215861-p2.html

I saw a new National High School record set in the girls pole vault 14' 1.25".

There was good competition and I felt sorry for a couple of athletes who came in third by thousanths of a second.
