Speaking of Tice... here is a team he was a player on...

that team that got oh so close again... but dropped the ball... future visions of things to come :rotflmao:

Jan. 17, 1988: NFC Championship Game: Darrin Nelson drops a pass at the goal line on fourth-and-4 from the Redskins' 6-yard-line with 52 seconds to play in a 17-10 loss to Washington.

"MeatHead" had plenty of time to practice losing on the Vikings didn't he :)

And these "lean" times are about to return!

    Lean years

For about a quarter century after Lombardi left the Packers, they had comparatively little success compared to the 1960s.

In the 24 seasons from 1968 to 1991, the Packers had only five seasons with a winning record (above .500), one being the shortened 1982 strike season.

They appeared in the playoffs twice during that period, with a record of 1-2.

The period saw five different head coaches - Bengston, Devine, Starr, Gregg, Infante - two of which were former Packer players in Lombardi's era (Starr and Gregg), and one of which was a former coach (Bengston).

Examples of poor draft choices shaping seasons are often mentioned in the context of this time period.
Examples include the 1974 draft, in which coach Dan Devine sent five draft picks (two first-rounders, two second-rounders and a third) to the Los Angeles Rams for aging quarterback John Hadl who would spend only 1 1/2 seasons in Green Bay.

Another came in 1989, when players such as Barry Sanders, Deion Sanders, and Derrick Thomas were available, and the Packers chose offensive lineman Tony Mandarich. Though rated highly by nearly every professional scout at the time, Mandarich's performance failed to meet expectations. ESPN has rated Mandarich as the third "biggest sports flop" in the last 25 years

Remember in 2001, the Panthers beat the Vikings in the opening game of the season. Carolina never won another game. That same year, the Lions were 0-12 and going up against Minnesota. The Lions won 27-24, and if it weren't for a Lion victory over the Cowboys in the last regular season game, the Lions and Panthers would have only had one win on the year, with their only victory coming against the Vikings.

    Another couple pics for ya:

Even the Original Cheeshead was Lost :rotflmao:

As the second quarter ended in the championship game between the Green Bay Packers and the New York Giants, Curly Lambeau was contemplating what to tell his players.

He knew this would be one of the most important chalk talks of his coaching career. With the Packers losing 16-14, the players would look to him for a revised game plan. Coming up with the right strategy, adjustments, and motivating words could turn the halftime deficit into a victory.

Incredibly, through his numskullery, Lambeau never did give that crucial talk. He was so lost in thought on his way to the locker room that he ended up lost in the stadium.

Lingering behind his players, Lambeau somehow made a wrong
turn under the Polo Grounds. He opened the door to what he thought was the clubhouse and wound up out on the street. Before he realized his error, the door slammed shut behind him and he was locked out.

The coach frantically pounded on the door to no avail, then raced to the nearest gate. But the guard refused to let him in. "If you're the coach, what are you doing out here on the sidewalk?" the guard asked snidely.

Swearing a blue streak, Lambeau hustled off to another gate. But no amount of pleading, cajoling, or threatening could get him past the next guard, who shoved him away with the sarcastic refrain, "Yeah, sure, and I'm the King of England."

Meanwhile, back in the locker room, the Packers were wondering what had happened to their coach. Back then, teams didn't have the cadre of assistants that today's clubs have. As the halftime minutes elapsed, the perplexed players couldn't agree on a revised game plan.

Unbeknownst to them, their angry, red-faced coach had now charged into the main gate, only to be stopped once again. Spewing the vilest language of his life at the top of his lungs, Lambeau attracted a big crowd, including some reporters.

The scribes immediately recognized Lambeau and convinced the guards that he was indeed the Green Bay coach. By the time he reached the locker room, the second half was about to begin. Without Lambeau's crucial halftime instructions, the Packers faltered in the last 2 quarters and lost 23-17.

How Embarrassing does a team have to be...

2002 Draft... Vikings allow their 15 minutes to expire, thus allowing the Chiefs to trade up and take the player the Vikings ultimately had wanted and turned in... Ryan Sims. To there embarassment, they had to go back and select another player in haste. Laughing stock of draft lore :)

How about a few good jokes:

Q: How many Vikings does it take to win a Superbowl?
A: No one knows, and we may never find out!

Q: Where do you go in MN in case of a tornado?
A: To the Metrodome - they'll never have a touchdown there.

Q: What's the difference between the MN Vikings and the Taliban?
A: The Taliban has a running game.

Q: Do you know why the Minnesota Vikings play in a dome?
A: Because God doesn't want to watch them play either.

Since we Packer fans are in a negative spout... I thought I would share what one Viking fan thinks of the Team... :rotflmao:

    http://www.bryanhauer.com/2006/12/03/why-i-hope-the-minnesota-vikings-lose-every-game-this-season/

Now let me start out by stating that I was born in St. Paul, MN and have been a life-long Vikings fan. I’ve stuck with them through thick and thin, but now I’ve come to the realization that their current coach and quarterback are driving the organization into the ground.

I too like many others was excited about the new direction the team was taking. A new owner, coach and a lot of new personel, but after actually watching this now pathetic organization I can’t help but hope we just continue to lose because I now believe that will be the only way anyone will actually make a change.

I’ve always thought Brad Johnson was a mediocre quarterback at best. I thought this when he was previously with the Vikings, when he was with the Tampa Bay Bucs (even though he won a Super Bowl ring) and now that he’s back with the Vikes. I’ve always said that “having Brad Johnson as your quarterback is like having Vinnie Testaverde… you’re simply accepting mediocrety.”

Now don’t get me wrong it’s not all Brad Johnson’s fault, but he has shown that he can single handedly lose a game for us.

The Vikings simply don’t have any real weapons besides their run defense and the occasional long run by Chester Taylor. We can be damn sure that Brad Johnson isn’t going have any long passes. I mean he’ll throw the same bullshit 3 yard dump pass on 3rd and 9 and get a few yards and then throw a 40 yard bomb for an interception on 4th and 1 with the game on the line. This also goes back to the ****** coaching staff we have. I’ve never seen a more conservative coaching staff and mind you I went through the entire Dennis Green era.

Also we have no real offensive threats. As much as I hated Randy Moss for his ego and attitude at least we had a real threat always on the field. I mean the team had a real swagger cause we knew we had the baddest Mother Fu**er in the league. Now we have really no one.

One change that should have been made a long time ago was the quarterback change and I can happily say I’m writing this during the 4th quarter and the Vikes have finally benched Johnson. Thank God!

What’s really wierd is that the Vikes have a great young, mobile quarterback in Tavaris Jackson, but apparently he’s been hurt and is just now practicing again. They just put in Brooks Bollinger (ex Wisconsin Badger) who isn’t anything special either, but at least he’s younger and a little more mobile. Maybe Brad Childress should have taken a page from Bill Parcell’s book and made the QB change a lot earlier. Hell, look at how that has worked out for the Cowboys.

All I can say is… if you’re not going to make any changes and simply accept losing each week knowing good and well that Brad Johnson isn’t going to win one game for you, then just let the public no that. Don’t try to BS us by saying what you’re working on for this weeks game. We all know if nothing changes that we’re simply going to lose. I mean look at how many offensive touchdowns we have this year. It’s pitiful!

Make some changes now or… I hope we lose every game until Childress and Johnson are gone.

Since I was looking up the specifics on this trade today... I thought I would post it yet again... :rotflmao:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herschel_Walker_Trade

    The Trade

    Minnesota Vikings
    RB Herschel Walker
    Dallas's 3rd round pick - 1990 (54)
    San Diego's 5th round pick - 1990 (116)
    Dallas's 10th round pick - 1990 (249)
    Dallas's 3rd round pick - 1991 (68)

    Dallas Cowboys
    LB Jesse Solomon
    LB David Howard
    CB Isaac Holt
    RB Darrin Nelson
    DE Alex Stewart
    Minnesota's 1st round pick in 1991 (21)
    Minnesota's 2nd round pick in 1990 (47)
    Minnesota's 6th round pick in 1990 (158)
    Minnesota's 1st round pick in 1991 (conditional) - (11)
    Minnesota's 2nd round pick in 1991 (conditional) - (38)
    Minnesota's 1st round pick in 1993 (conditional) - (13)
    Minnesota's 2nd round pick in 1992 (conditional) - (40)
    Minnesota's 3rd round pick in 1992 (conditional) - (71)

    Aftermath and Legacy/Infamy
Dallas ended up with a total of six of Minnesota's picks over the succeeding years, two of which were used to draft Emmitt Smith and Darren Woodson. Jimmy Johnson used the other draft picks to make trades with other teams around the NFL. One of the trades led to obtaining the first overall draft pick in 1991, which was used to draft Russell Maryland. In other words, the trade of Herschel Walker to the Vikings contributed largely to the Cowboys success in the early 1990s. For this reason, ESPN.com's Page 2 lists it as the 8th most lopsided trade in sports history. [1] Seventeen years later, the trade was still an easy target for satire: one ESPN columnist, assessing the impact of free agency on the NFL, noted that it had almost entirely replaced significant trades and by doing so, "took away one of the greatest shortcuts to becoming a Super Bowl champion: fleecing the Vikings." [2] :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

Despite Walker's performance as a Minnesota Viking, his trade was widely perceived as an exceptionally poor move for what the Vikings had to give up in order to get him, and remains one of the most frequently vilified roster moves of the team's history (indeed, in the history of Minnesota sports). "Herschel the Turkey," a mocking "honor" given out by the Star Tribune newspaper to particularly inept or disgraceful Minnesota sports personalities, is named for him. it was made into an episode of ESPN Classic top 5 reasons you can't blame

It boosts my moral everytime I read it.... :rotflmao:

As does this when I shut my eyes and envision it :)

October 30, 1988: In one of the most memorable runs ever by an NFL quarterback, Steve Young scrambles 49 yards to score a touchdown with 1:58 left to give the 49ers a come-from-behind, 24-21 victory over Minnesota. Young, who can't find an open receiver on third down, eludes tackle attempts by at least four Vikings before stumbling the final few yards and diving into the end zone.

Green Bay - It was slaughter at high noon, a 35-0 rout of seismic proportion almost never seen anymore in the National Football League.

When the New England Patriots got done with the Green Bay Packers Sunday, Lambeau Field was half empty and the Packers knew their place. If the Packers didn't, they would have been in denial.

It's always best to be wary what you wish for when Bill Belichick is lurking on the other sideline. Hiding his own team's weaknesses and exposing those of the Packers, Belichick badly outcoached McCarthy just as his players badly outperformed the Packers.

"I don't think (teams) fear coming to Lambeau anymore," tight end Bubba Franks said. "We don't have that mystique. We've been trying to get it all year. We don't have it. At all."

"Offensively," tackle Chad Clifton said, "that's the worst performance I've seen in my seven years."

"To get beat 35-0, I've never seen that," Driver said. "We should all be hanging our heads. We embarrassed ourselves at Lambeau Field."

Super Bowl Musings from a Four-Time Loser

Ah, yes. The week before the Super Bowl. The week when ESPN trots out ALL of the NFL Films library and catalogs every moment from every one of the previous big games. Now, being cursed as a Vikings fan, you'd think I would avoid these things like the plague. After all, the Vikes were THE ORIGINAL Super Bowl bridesmaids. We lost four of the first 13 title games, that's almost a third! That's nothing to be proud of, Rusty, but at least it doesn't relegate a team to the forgotten land of the been-there-once-lost-and-never-came-back Chargers and Falcons. Even the Eagles and Bengals are rank amateurs when it comes to losing the Big Game, they've only managed to do it twice. The Broncos ruined their perfect oh-fer when they won consecutive titles in the late 90's, making it ok that they got stomped in four previous tries. Only the Buffalo Bills can challenge the Norseman in Super Bowl futility. Some say they take the cake because they not only equalled the Vikes four losses, but DID IT IN CONSECUTIVE YEARS! With essentially the same team every time, they lost FOUR SUPER BOWLS IN A ROW!!! I quantify these two teams failures as being from two different eras, the Vikes the "old school" and the Bills "the modern era", of wait-'til-next-year legends. When Minnesota lost their four, the game was on Sunday afternoon, halftime was the standard 20 minute rest, and the pregame was a half hour long. The Bills went down in flames in the age of after-dinner kickoffs, pregame that starts before you're out of bed on Sunday and halftime shows that Vegas has difficulty matching. I am constantly reminded by fans of opposing teams that the Vikings are without a Lombardi Trophy. As painful as this is, at least the Vikings (and Bills too) are not one of those forgotten franchises who've never made a bad impression on the games biggest stage. Better to fail than to be forgotten! Anyway, I made mention of the ESPN NFL Films shows because for the rest of this week I will be giving my (sometimes irrational) thoughts on each Vikings Super Bowl flop. I'll watch the shows on TV, then give my honest, biased and spiteful views on each game, opposing team, coach and other details relevant to how the Vikings lost (again) It's the only therapy I know of to get me through this week. :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

    Worse one..

The Vikings last game at Metropolitan Stadium was on December 20, 1981. The stadium was demolished, and The Mall of America sits where that stadium once was located.
