Excellent work Arrowgantuan. you are right Spaulding. Some heavy hitters like Green, Jackson, Longwell are coming up as Free Agents . Franks has to be dealt with again . This is the way it is in N.F.L. since the Salary cap and free agency was established in 1993. The Teams have to work with it as best they can, and try to stay out of "Cap hell. So far the Packers have operated quite nicely in the past decade. You can't keep all your players, but try to maintain your key ones. "Proof of pudding",The Packers have not had one losing season in the last 12 years (1992-2004) Look at the San Francisco 49ers- 2-14 last season. This is what happens if you mortgage your future by backloading your players contracts to win now and fail. Ted Thompson will not do that and had proved it by his moves he had made since he started his job with Green Bay earlier this year, his handling of Wahle, Rivera, and Sharper. Now with Walker and Davenport and anybody elso who try to use the holdout to negotiate a contract with 2 or more years left on it.. . Ted has to do what he has to do. He can't cave in on their demands until they full fill their contracts. The alternative is salary cap hell!! If Walker comes into June minicamp or training camp and fails to seriously participate in the training sessions, Thompson and Sherman must suspend him and get security escourt him out of camp. and keep fining him until he ends his holdout and co- operates in everyway in the Training sessions. This is a concerted effort by Drew Rosenhaus and his player clients to break N.F.L. contract system now in effect. Let the holdouts sit until they get the message. A contract is a contract-Fullfill it. Then get your big payday, and the Packers will do it, They must do It!!

You have to hold money for bringing in people when players go on Injured reserve.

How do you increase cap space?
a) Bubba has until June 22 before he really has to start dealing with the Packers on a longer term more cap friendly deal.

b) Cutting Hunt before the season may save some cap but will cost next year.

c) Cut higher priced veterans.

Good point many teams still have to cut and June 1 provides some cuts.
Not many rookies have been signed for that reason. Some contracts have to be renegotiated.

Ted Tompson got a lot of cuts done early.

With only the top 51 salaries counting once the season starts, the rookies make a smaller impact than you think. Once Rodgers, Murphy, and Collins sign they will bump 3 others down the list so there salaries will count about $950,000(the bumped salaries) less than there actually cap figures make it appear. The rest of the picks will have cap charges less than the top 51, so if they make the team the salary charge for the team won't go up.

the best thing about this info that arrow got for us is that even with the FA coming up next year, we will still be in better shape than we started this off season. TT has done a pretty decent job so far. with all the cap problems we started with its good to know that some progress has been made

PWT36, you make some good pts on how GB has managed the cap and been competitive for the last 12 yrs. However, what's the down side to their philosophy? Has signing "their own" created a sense of compliancy? Likewise, has their unwillingness to resign key veterans or play in FA kept them from going deeper in the playoffs? I think so on both accounts. Farve is the key and the simple fact is GB (Wolf and Sherman) haven't put enough weapons around him when he was prime to win the big one. Wolf has admitted to this. I think Sherman and TT are still in denial about it. Hopefully, some of the rookies come out of nowhere and Bates can turn things around on the defense. I don't see it happening, but I am hoping it does 8)

Here are some additional considerations for the cap.

Steve Morely will ride his NFLE exemption to the end but will likely be cut costing $33,333 against this year's cap and $33,333 against next year's cap.

Todd Franz is on the bubble and if cut will still cost $31,160 against the 05 cap.

Brennan Curtain when cut will cost $14K against this year's cap.

Chris Johnson will cost $9K against the 05 cap when he is cut.

So what out of a eighty something million salary cap why is 87K+ so important?

Because The Packers are $176,850 under the cap these cuts would put them at $89,357 under but the rookie cap allocation in tact. Consider also if we cut any rookies, even if resigned to the practice squad, the signing bonuses count against this year's cap.

The bright side is that the Bubba Franks Transistion Tag wraps up on June 22nd. If no other team makes a bid before then, Ted and Bubba have the opportunity to sign a long term deal after the 22nd that would reduce his current 05 cap figure of 2.095 million. A signing bonus will be spread over the length of the contract.

If Bubba signs a long term deal, then this is where Rosenhaus hopes to get signing bonus money for a long term deal for Walker.

In fact of the top 53 salaries the Packers have 32 are not under contract for next year. The number will change downward with rookies getting signed. The 2006 Packers will look a little different.

Walker really picked a bad time for a hold out.

Perhaps other cap gurus could correct me, but someone on another board said Franks counts inside the current cap. Unless another team takes him, his 2+ mill transition tag counts as his current contract when the season opens. It makes sense, as that is a "contract" unless someone else trumps it.

Rodgers contract could end up in a pissing match. His agent is going to contend he should get the second highest contract in the draft, though he was drafted 24th. "In Ted We Trust" will correctly say he was drafted 24th, so that's his mark. Agents, are agents and they have to give it a shot.

Also, 11 draft picks, even though most of them are low rounders, will still strain the rookie cap.

I think Rodgers contract will end up alot higher than a normal 24th pick but not nearly as high as second. I wouldn't be suprised to see his contract be in the same range as those picked from 10-15.

I don't believe that's right. My sources have us at $6.1 million with just over $4 million allocated to the rookies based on our 11 picks. Irrespective of which numbers you use, Franks is definitely included as the team must include the full offer when it is made not when it is signed by the player.

Top, the Cox net figures are from early April.

net, Frank's 2M is counting in the current cap for the exact reasons you stated. Once he signed a long term deal, his cap number will fall.

No one is mentioning the $10M+ in dead money the Pack is carrying this year. Next year we'll have alot of money. Green counts over $4M this year, his cap
number will go down next year with a new contract. Longwell & Flanigan are probably in the same boat. They make alot of money this year.

Between the over 10 million and dead cap and the over 10 million Brett Favre counts against the cap we are almost as bad off as San Francisco was last year. Dealing with the cap as Thompson finding minimum wage players that aren't too bad is a great credit to him.

Some creativity in the off season next and the sustainability of the Packer winning seasons will continue. Staying good this long is remarkable.
