I like Advanced NFL Stats blog, and, according to them, there are 2 things that statistically correlate best with wins: 1) passing efficiency, and 2) defensive passing efficiency. The running game can improve no. 1, but it is passing that will win games. The NFL has become the old AFL.
The run/pass split should be analyzed in terms of percentages instead of number of attempts. There's an interesting article here. Seems like we should aim to rush the ball on at least 30% of our offensive snaps.
Listened to a recent BS Report with Bill Barnwell, who made the observation that this year offenses are exploiting the nickle by designing runs with 3 WRs, 1 TE, and a single back. He thought this was a game changer and his argument made sense. Incidently, he complimented Woodson for being a strong CB against the run, a rarity in today's NFL.
