The umpire is in his old position in the last two minutes of each half... so no.

    Agreed.
Any team can work on this at training camp.
And if they don't have an actual ref to use, then they can just use a coach, an extra player, a fan from the stands or anyone to play the part of ref.
So Manning should either shut the **** up about it or start working on it.
And if he's not working on it then he has only himself or the coaching staff to blame.

Oh Manning drives me nuts. I really hope he gets knocked down a peg or 2 this year. He must have been Ghandi in a previous life or something because his kharma is insane. If they are so concerned about the umpire getting hit, put some pads and a helmet on him. This isn't ping-pong, it's American Football. Contact is part of the sport.

I don't think it's ever going back to the way it was before due to the fact the NFL could be held liable for any serious injuries to an Umpire since they have admitted they know it's dangerous to have a ump there. At least that is a point somebody brought up on one of the sports channels. Doubt it goes back to the way it was.

Still, wish they had just had the guy put on a helmet and pads instead.

Can you actually imagine what that would look like?
    LOL
That would be quite a sight to see.

And I'm sure a ref suited up would take a handoff or two in a game with Burnt Fart on third and two.
Anything to help him and the Viqueens.

The ref probably shouldn't have the regular pads and helmut maybe something lighter, and leather helmets. The only reason why I suggest the leather is no facemask so no Ref could say their helmet was blocking their view, and its some protection rather than none.
