So what was his department? Blocking, tackling, returning, kicking, punting, kickoffs?

I don´t know. He was a kickoff and punt returner in the league though, so it would be obvious if coached the returners. After finishing 30th in kickoff return average it would nake sense to not bring him back as well.

I'm surprised they actually let someone go instead of blaming it on the players or lack of talent. Too bad Lovat gets a pass and the defensive coaches get a pass on the inability to tackle.

Jeremy Ross was reason enough to fire him. For all we know Shaky Smithson was a stud, and this staff just failed miserably with him. Ok, that's a stretch if I've ever typed one, but you get the point.
