No surprise here as the Packers would have had to pay him more than $7 million in 2015 to do that.

If Sherrod can prove during (2014) Training camp and 2014 season that He has come back from that broken leg and play OT effectively for Packers after missing 2 seasons for the Packers . The Packer could offer him a Contract Extension for the 2015 season.

This can happen ,as it did for Former Packer center Mike Flanagan . Mike was drafted in 1996. In 1996 Packer training camp Flanagan broke his leg. Then during 1997 camp, Flanagan again broke the same leg more seriously.

In 1998, Flanagan completed 1998 Packer training camp and Mike was the backup veteran Packer center Jeff Dellenbach and played in 2 games for Packers in that 1998 season. Dellenbach retired after 1998 season and Mike Flanagan was an excellent Packer starting Center from 1999 to 2005.

After 2005 season , Mike Flanagan left Green Bay in Free agency and finished his career with Houston Texans

Of course the Packers can re-sign him after next season, but there was absolutely no chance they would guarantee to pay him more than $7 million for 2015 now.
