Packers Claim FB Kuhn, Place Herron On I.R., Sign 7 To Practice Squad

The Green Bay Packers claimed fullback John Kuhn on waivers, placed running back Noah Herron on injured reserve and signed seven players to the practice squad Sunday. The transactions were announced by Ted Thompson, Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations.

Claimed on waivers from Pittsburgh, Kuhn (pronounced KOON), played nine games with the Steelers in 2006. The second-year pro from Shippensburg (Pa.) spent the 2005 season on the Steelers' practice squad.

Signed to the practice squad were wide receiver David Clowney, wide receiver Chris Francies, tight end Clark Harris, linebacker Spencer Havner, tackle Orrin Thompson, quarterback Paul Thompson and running back Corey White.

I expected us to sign Thompson to PS, and am glad we signed Clowney. WRs take time to develop, and he just needs some seasoning. I foresee him being our burner in the future. I love the guy's speed.

PRACTIC SQUAD

The bright spot about the releases is that all generally cleared waivers to be put on PS...a wake up call for Clowney to become the deep threat gamer that the Pack desperately need.

MORE MOVES?

So do you think TT will add a few more players off the waivers before the opening game?

GOOD PLAYERS AVAILABLE ON WAIVERS:

You can expect at least one more move, including TE & maybe later LB.

SUNDAY PRACTICE

http://blogs.jsonline.com/packers/archive/2007/09/02/driver-morency-return-to-practice.aspx

Driver, Morency return to practice

In the 45 minutes of practice open to the media, Packers wide receiver Donald Driver was on the field and participated in his first practice since spraining his right foot against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Aug. 23.

Despite being in a boot as late as Thursday's game against the Tennesse Titans, Driver looked very healthy. No noticeable limp or anything else that would indicate he wouldn't be ready for next Sunday's season opener.

RB Vernand Morency appeared to be participating fully for the first time and also looked healthy. He got a lot of personal work with QB Brett Favre on the side. Looked like a tutoring session.

Formerly injured players also on the field and participating: RB Brandon Jackson (concussion), S Aaron Rouse (hamstring), OG Jason Spitz (calf), OT Tony Moll (stinger), OG Tony Palmer (hamstring), and DE Kabeer Gbaja-Biamilia (knee)

Fullback John Kuhn, who was claimed off waivers from the Pittsburgh Steelers, had not arrived in time to practice. DE Michael Montgomery (knee) continues to be out.

Notebook: McCarthy says Driver 'is doing well'

Indications are receiver Donald Driver has a decent chance of playing in Sunday's regular-season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles, but his sprained foot probably won't be put through a full test in practice until later in the week. The Green Bay Packers' No. 1 receiver, however, did take part in some of Sunday's practice. He went through the pre-stretching walkthrough period, the team stretch and some individual drills. Though he looked a bit gimpy both on the field and in the locker room, coach Mike McCarthy expressed optimism about Driver's chances of playing. The Packers likely will list Driver as "limited" on their first injury report, which must be released on Wednesday. That's a new designation of injury status this year. The league calls for teams to list injured players under the following four categories after practice on Wednesdays and Thursdays: out, did not participate in practice, limited participation in practice and full participation in practice. On Fridays, teams will then use the traditional categories — out, doubtful, questionable and probable — on their reports. Safety Aaron Rouse didn't appear to be participating in practice on Sunday. Other players who sat out against Tennessee but returned to practice on at least a part-time basis were: running backs Vernand Morency (knee) and Brandon Jackson (concussion), guard Tony Palmer (hamstring), tackle Tony Moll (stinger) and defensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila (knee)....

INSIDER SCOUT: HOW TT PICKED KUHN & GRANT....

http://packers.scout.com/2/675033.html

Packers make more moves

A day after reducing their roster to the mandated limit of 53 players, the Green Bay Packers made more moves in preparation for next Sunday's season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Packers placed running back Noah Herron on season-ending injured reserve and claimed fullback John Kuhn on waivers, the team announced.

The Packers claimed Kuhn on waivers from Pittsburgh, a day after released veteran Brandon Miree. The second-year pro from Shippensburg (Pa.) played nine games with the Steelers in 2006. He spent the 2005 season on the Steelers’ practice squad. "We we looked at him a lot last year, and we considered him in a similar type transaction last year, and we wound up doing something a little different," Thompson said. "He was a runner at Shippensburg State, which now we have two players from Shippensburg State on this team. He was an outstanding runner I suppose. But he's been there on the practice squad on and off for a couple years. He's a big guy, he's tough, a very square blocker. He catches the ball well. He can run the ball when necessary downhill in short-yardage situations. We just felt like, we only had one fullback, and we needed to get some more umph there, and we think he'll be a good addition. Supposed to be a very good guy."

Rookie Korey Hall enters the season opener as the team's starting fullback. He beat out Miree, who sustained a neck stinger injury early in training camp and never returned to form. Kuhn was en route to Green Bay today and was not at practice this afternoon. Without Herron, the Packers currently have four running backs - Brandon Jackson, Vernand Morency, DeShawn Wynn and newly acquired Ryan Grant.

The Packers gave the New York Giants an undisclosed draft pick in next year's NFL draft to get Grant on Saturday. Thompson said he tried to get a running back with more experience but like what Grant has to offer. "We talked to other teams about different guys. We liked what we saw in Ryan during the preseason," Thompson said. "He has nice size, he runs well, he catches the ball well. He plays on all their special teams, and we felt pretty comfortable with him. I know he hasn't played a lot in the National Football League, but what we saw on the preseason tape and what we know of him as a person, we feel pretty good about. We talked to Carlyle, who played college ball with him, and Frank Walker, who was a teammate of his with the Giants. He's a good guy, typical Notre Dame kind of kid, so we feel pretty good about him."

Rookie running back returns to practice: Jackson will be ready for regular-season opener

Rookie Brandon Jackson, who's returning from a concussion sustained Aug. 26, was cleared to practice Sunday and took part in all drills. That's a source of considerable relief for Packers. "Brandon went through the whole thing," coach Mike McCarthy said after practice Sunday. "He looked to be fine." If Morency doesn't play this week, then seventh-round pick DeShawn Wynn probably will be the backup even though he missed all but the final preseason game because of a thigh injury, and Ryan Grant, acquired in a trade only Saturday, will be the No. 3 back. Morency appears to have an OK chance of playing this week, or at least being cleared medically to play. For the first time since straining his patellar tendon in the first practice of training camp July 28, Morency on Sunday took part in some drills in practice, though he did no 11-on-11 work. The issue with him might not be whether he's cleared to play Sunday, but whether he's in good enough football shape to contribute after missing all of camp and having only one week of practice for preparation. Going into training camp, the Packers were planning him and Jackson to split the large majority of snaps at halfback this season, but Morency probably will have to be brought along slowly early in the season.

The trade for Grant showed how desperate the Packers were for a healthy running back, and that they coveted Grant more than other backs they might have been able to pick up on waivers or sign as a street free agent. The best free agent available was 32-year-old Corey Dillon, whom they showed no interest in. Perhaps the most noteworthy prospect cut Saturday was Antonio Pittman, the former Ohio State halfback and fourth-round pick of New Orleans this year. The Packers were not one of the two teams that put a claim in on Pittman — St. Louis, which got him, and Cincinnati were. An NFL source said General Manager Ted Thompson traded a sixth-round pick for Grant and the deal contained no conditions, so the Giants keep the pick regardless of whether Grant plays a down for the Packers. Thompson covets draft picks as much as any GM in the NFL, so the deal means he had little intention of claiming Pittman or any other halfback off waivers. Grant brings some size to the position — he's 6-foot-1 and 218 pounds — but has never played in an NFL regular-season game. As an undrafted rookie, he spent 2005 on the Giants' practice squad, and then he missed all of last season on the non-football injury list after severing a tendon in his forearm in the offseason. Grant made the Giants' roster as the final halfback and was playing on the first team of all four special teams before New York traded him Saturday.

Pack adds tight end to practice squad

The Green Bay Packers rounded out their practice squad of nine players when they added tight end Ryan Krause who was released by the San Diego Chargers. "Krause originally was a sixth-round pick of the San Diego Chargers and appeared in five regular-season games from 2004 to 2006," writes Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. The addition of Krause makes for two tight ends on the practice squad with seventh round draft choice Clark Harris being the other one. Coach McCarthy has said that he'd like five players between tight end and fullback in whatever combination it takes to reach five. The Packers aren't there yet. Presumably, they will add a tight end to the 53 man roster sometime this season. Krause visited Green Bay this past March as the Packers were thinking about signing him as a free agent. They never ended up doing so.

Grant practices & Wynn gets wake up call

http://www.madison.com/wsj/home/sports/packers/213598

Packers: Running Out of Options.

And Ryan Grant, acquired in a trade with the New York Giants during Saturday's final cuts, arrived and practiced but has a lot of catching up to do. Grant, who finished the preseason with 90 yards on 18 carries with the Giants, arrived in time to practice with the Packers on Sunday and spent much of the day with running backs coach Edgar Bennett trying to learn the offense. ''We have a plan,'' Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. ''We will use them in combination. We've talked about (running back by) committee from day one. It's now time to put the committee into play.'' At this point, Jackson appears likely to start against the Eagles, while McCarthy should know more about Morency's status after the team practices today and Wednesday.

Wynn, meanwhile, said Thompson and McCarthy made it clear to him that his roster spot is tenuous. ''Basically, (they said) I've got to prove myself and work hard, and if they see any decline in my work ethic or my mentality, I probably won't be here long,'' said Wynn, who rushed 21 times for 54 yards against Tennessee. ''Some people may feel like I don't deserve to be on the 53-man roster. The message is pretty much to earn my keep.

WAIVERS CLAIMS: MORE?

http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=656100

The Packers put in waiver claims for three other players Sunday, but Kuhn was a priority claim and the other claims were voided once the Packers were awarded him. The three the Packers submitted claims for were: tight end Marcus Freeman (cut by Baltimore), running back Lousaka Polite (cut by Dallas) and tight end Derek Schouman (cut by Buffalo).

Yeah, people are choosing to ignore that news though, and would rather cry and whine about how the running game will stink.

Mo is back, Jackson had a MILD concussion, and we have backups after them.

I mean...THE WORLD IS GOING TO END! OMGZ! DHAUDH!H

It tough to be positive though, Vernand missed the entire preseason. He'll probably be rusty and stiff the first couple games. And any concussion is pretty serious.

But saying there is no reason to be concerned is not logical. There is definitely room for concern. Not panic, but concern non the less. I don't believe Morency is really ready to go yet, and more then likely won't be a large factor until the 2nd or 3rd week, at best. I'm sure Jackson will be fine, but we just have to hope he can handle the majority of the carries until Morency is full strength.

As far as Wynn and Grant go, well, I just don't expect much from them, at least not anytime soon.

RETURN SPECIALISTS

http://www.packersnews.com/includes/newspaper/blogs/insider/index.shtml

Blackmon questionable for returns

Will Blackmon's availability for punt and kickoff returns is in question for Sunday's opener as he continues to recover from a broken thumb. The second-year pro was named the primary return man in the preseason, but special teams coordinator Mike Stock said today Blackmon hasn't proven he can handle the jobs with a cast on his left hand. Last year's primary punt returner, veteran Charles Woodson, could resume that duty if Blackmon isn't ready and is listed atop the depth chart on the Packers' Web site. Greg Jennings, James Jones and Tramon Williams also are options. Williams, whose surprising appearance on the 53-man roster likely was related to his return ability, would return kickoffs if Blackmon cannot, Stock said. Rookie running back DeShawn Wynn is expected to be the second deep man regardless.

MONDAY PRACTICE

http://www.packersnews.com/includes/newspaper/blogs/insider/index.shtml

Monday's practice

Teams don't have to provide an official injury report until Wednesday, but it appeared that the only Packers' player who missed practice completely was defensive end Michael Montgomery, who has a knee injury and is expected to miss several weeks. During the regular season, reporters are allowed to watch the early portion of practice until the Packers begin team (11-on-11) periods. Running back Vernand Morency and receiver Donald Driver both took part in all the pre-team periods, but it's unknown whether they continued to practice.

On the field for the first time were newly acquired fullback John Kuhn, who was claimed off waivers from Pittsburgh, and new practice squad tight end Ryan Krause.

NOTE: REPORTS TONIGHT.

RETURNERS & INJURIES UPDATE

http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=656100

It's a good thing Charles Woodson has been fielding punts in practice during training camp, because he's about to do it in the regular season....
Stock said that as of now he would go with rookie running back DeShawn Wynn and first-year cornerback Tramon Williams on kickoff returns. Blackmon is still a candidate, but it will depend on his thumb.

Injury update: Running back Vernand Morency took part in his first full-padded practice since injuring his right knee on the first day of training camp. Morency shared snaps with rookies Brandon Jackson and Wynn during the portion of practice open to reporters. However, the Packers have not yet said whether he will play against Philadelphia Sunday. Receiver Donald Driver (foot) practiced for a second straight day and appears to be moving pretty well. Guard Tony Palmer (hamstring) returned to pads for the first time since Aug. 13.
