Nnamdi Asomugha anyone?

Former Raiders beat writer David White believes impending free agent Nnamdi Asomugha will end up with the Jets or Packers.
"I know him well. ... Mark it down," said White. After playing for the Raiders for eight seasons, White says Asomugha wants to play for a proven winner. White added that the shutdown corner has said he'd like to play for Jets coach Rex Ryan and his best friend is Packers corner Charles Woodson. Asomugha will draw interest from virtually every team in the league as the best defensive player available, but fitting him under the potential new CBA's salary cap is another story altogether.

Teams simply don't throw his way. Stats are greatly misleading. He's an elite shotdown corner.

I'd love for him to be a Packer at a reasonable price--whatever that is these days.

Oh, no doubt. HE's an incredible talent. I think, if he wants to go here, if the price is right, it wouldn't hurt to have his talents.

But he would need to take a serious pay cut. We can't afford to pay him what he earns right now, and certainly not what he will receive in FA.

THERE IS NO CHANCE IN HEAVEN or HELL that the PACKERS are the team that SIGNS NMAMDI.

Have we not seen Ted Thompson's MO the past 4 years? Let's be realistic here... there are a lot of good things to talk about for us now, but this one needs to go into the DREAMS thread along with JULIUS PEPPERS from last off-season.

Let's review:
-With the exception of early on when he took over a bad and aging team, TT does not go shopping in free agency. Even the one big name, Woodson, was a gift because amazingly not ONE other single team wanted him as a CB to their team. None. Tampa Bay wanted him, but to move to safety.

-This MO has been working as we can see with back-to-back playoff appearances despite a ton of injuries.

-Sam Shields.
They think Shields and Tramon will be a great pair of CBs for years going forward, and amazingly both guys were undrafted, compared to the 2 pieces of crap Pat Lee and Brandon Underwood, who were. Lee a terrible 2nd or 3rd round pick even.

Not trying to start anything but if no one wanted Woodson (which everyone says) then why did we pay him $52 million? Including over $10 mil the first year.

I just never bought into that. If that was the case then we should have offered him the minimum.

He has some incredible statistics. I want to say a year or two ago that opposing quarterbacks only completed 7 passes on him the entire year And this year only 27 passes were thrown at the reciever he was covering, of which just 10 were caught. It doesn't get much better than that. The reason he doesn't have any INT's is because no one throws it at him.

It would be a great addition, I think. Will it happen? Probably not. While normally I am not in favor of throwing money around this is just such a great player I think TT should at least consider making a serious offer.

Get him. You could never have too many cornerbacks. Williams looks very, very good and Shields looks like a future starter. Woodson is getting up in years, so the signing would make sense.

I wouldn't dispute this signing, but I'd prefer that we didn't sign him.

I believe the Packers already maintain three quality cornerbacks and can secure slot specialists throughout the draft. I'd rather spend the money on restructuring the offensive line and resigning the veterans that we already possess.

Too early to say about Lee or Underwood. I thought Williams was average at best up to last season, and terrible this past preseason. I'd like to be as wrong about Lee and Underwood.

Maybe this guy (whose name is impossible) will scare everyone off with his demands and decide winning a Championship ring in Titletown is worth a cut in pay. Who knows?

And anyway, let's say Woodson's skills as a cover corner decline significantly next year and we are forced to move him to safety. Who is our nickel back? Remember how badly we were torn to shreds by elite quarterbacks last year when we had no reliable nickel back?

Maybe we can get someone through the draft. We probably should. But I think if the oppurtunity presents itself, where there is mutual interest between TT and Asomugha, we should make an attempt to land him. He and Tramon would form the best pair of cover corners in the game(well, maybe Revis and Cromartie would still be better) and Woodson could still roam around and do his thing. Shields could stay as the nickel back.

Now that Pro Bowl cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha has surprisingly found a way out of his contract with Oakland, his potential landing spots are beginning to shape up, as those who know him well are offering up their predictions.
According to former Raiders beat writer David White (now with the San Francisco Chronicle), Asomugha has long wanted to play for a proven winner, and his next home will likely come down to two locales: Green Bay and New York. The main motivating factor for a move to the Packers is Asomugha’s close friendship with standout cornerback Charles Woodson, and while it would seem that there wouldn’t be much in the way of space for him with the Jets, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them unload another player or two to make room for Asomugha next season.
A return back to Oakland is almost assuredly not in the cards, although it’s possible that Raiders owner Al Davis pulls out the stops and offers Asomugha another major contract to keep him in the fold. In any case, the team that does end up landing Asomugha will undoubtedly have to fork over one of the largest contracts in the history of the NFL, given his proven skill at a premium position.


With that being said, I would almost be as happy picking up Cromartie if he DOES go to NYJ. Only problem with both players is that they would want an obscene amount of money to play.



I would be happy to see us make a move for the right price, but if either is lookking for Woodson type $$$, forget it. Unfortunately, I think both will do so, as a team like the Vikes, Skins, or "Boys will offer them some "boy band" monetary figures.

Tramon Williams is a shut down, and just signed an extension. Woodson has lost a step, but he is still a HUGE playmaker and will be here until he retires. Sam Shields is a promising young player. I do agree that we need a corner.... a DIME corner. Which we will get through the draft.

Plus... Aso has the biggest contract for a DB in NFL history... We don't need that.

Yeah, because it's probably going to take a pay cut to get him here.

In this league, it's usually either win the big one or get paid. Unless you're a QB, the higher your pay grade doesn't necessarily correlate with how many SB's you win.

If he does take a pay cut to be a Packer it would show great character. He could help Tramon keep a competitive edge and alongside Woodson and Tramon he can keep Shields' development high.

Other than his contract, which he does deserve for the most part, he's a pretty modest guy from what I know.

No, I don't think it happens either. TT will lowball him even if he makes an offer. But remember, the last big name free agent TT signed was Charles Woodson. Woodson was 29 years-old, and had just left Oakland. Sounds like Asomugha now.

That is the only reason you wouldn't want Cro? How about for the fact that he gave up 7 TDs in the regular season? Definitely don't want that guy.

And Aso is a stand up human being. I have watched numerous interviews, and he is as classy as it comes.

Our line has played a lot better this season, in my opinion.

Clifton - Looks so much better now that he is healthy. Playing at a high level.
Colledge - Not gonna say much other than I am ready for a new LG. Colledge has worn out his welcome.
Wells - Had a great season a year ago and has built on it this year.
Sitton - Best RG in football.
Bulaga - Obviously he has struggled... But he is a rookie LT, playing out of position. I have to give him the benefit of the doubt.

With the exceptions of Wells, and Maybe Bulaga (who you even said was struggling, I would replace the whole line off your opinions(and mine are pretty in line w yours).
Clifton is over after this year. It is his swan song
Colledge I agree w you, never a fit, too many penalties, too many "what ifs". BACKUP at best on another team.
Wells has looked good, not great. Could survive and start elsewhere with the right circumstances.
Sitton REALLY?!?! His status is amplified by the lack of talent around him at best. He backs up at best on 25 out of 32 teams IMO.
Bulaga is a rookie, and he gets the OL break this year as such.

We still have major problems on this side of the ball, but currently it is working. If they produce another win, and show some heart, than I say let them keep it up.

The loose cannon on the linew remains Colledge though, as he always seems out of place, overmanned, and over penalized. He hurts us WAY more than helps us...
