Ted talks out of both sides of his mouth. He says they don't draft for need, but 'value'. While other teams had Harrell as a choice(Denver) no one had him ranked at 16. Meachem was ranked at 16, a value pick and also fills a need, possibly long-term.

If you are ranking players by value, how on earth could you not say Brady Quinn wouldn't have been the best value at 16? Regardless of the hype, the guy is a potential franchise QB. Wouldn't you think that ranks higher than a DT? Harrell might turn out to be a stud DT, but in reality, he better, given the draft position and the fact we had some fairly good DT's already on the roster. Aaron Rodgers? Since the winner would back up Brett Favre this year, let the winner have the job, trade the other. It was a win-win for the Packers.

Cleveland valued Quinn enough to give up its first pick next year, even though they have a couple of QB's around, including Charlie Frye.
I think the pick was also the beginning of the end for Corey Williams, at the very least the possibility of signing a Cullen Jenkins-type contract. The Packers won't pay two guys mucho dinero for essentially the same position, especially when you have a 6th round pick, Jolly, who is stupid enough to play his guts out for nothing. When he wants a market contract Ted will show him the door, too, I'm sure.

I could have fully understood if Ted traded down from 16, given his tendencies. But to take Harrell there was a bit of a reach and he left ignored the chance, potentially, to find the best player to succeed Brett Favre.

Regarding Jim Rome and all the other radio blabbers....take none of them seriously. You are merely a number on a piece of paper to them, which translates into dollars. They couldn't care less what you think.
It's all about ratings, so their rantings are nothing more than audio eargum designed to keep you around until the next ratings sweep.

The finest example I can think of is Colin Cowterd at ESPN. He mimics Rush Limbaugh, complete with the paper shuffling and limited-fact outrageous statements, so the sheep will go to his loud corral.

I listen but I really don't take what they say seriously. The print folks are still the best at letting you know what is going on, but they too, will be gone soon, victims of the Internet, TV and radio, and a general population growing less smart by the generation.

Quinn was a higher value -- for Cleveland. If he was such a great value, then why did everyone else pass on him as well -- including Miami. The same could be said for Rodgers two years ago.

the same can be said for any QB ... you never know when the next franchise QB is gona pop out of no where

I think the Packers have only one franchise QB and he's been here for a long long time already.

I agree....In this years draft, I thought the team that made the best move was the browns......The whole quinn thing was classic. They not only did they avoided the high pay, but they still signed him with their next pick.....IMO we could have done the same thing with Justin Harrell, made a better chiace and I feel he still would have been available for our next selection....He isnt a bad choice just not what we needed in that spot.

He WASNT going to be available for the Packers next selection...Denver wanted him, as did Cinncy..

As if I needed another reason to be pleased by the Harrell pick...ferret-faced Shanahan wanted him too. Any day we can screw the Broncos is a great day. (to me, anyway).

Meacham is a pansy, I dont want guys on the Packers WR corps who are afraid to go over the middle and make catches in traffic.

He's been injured twice already and hasn't even put pads on yet! You might be right about the guy. He's gonna be out 3-4 weeks with knee surgery.

Meacham's value got pushed upwards throughout the offseason due to lack of high end talent at WR (other than CJ) but LOTS of
depth at the position. Same with Bowe.

I listen to WDAE (Sports Animal) when I am driving in Tampa Bay. At noon, when the Jim Rome show begins, I exercise my rights as a listener - and turn the channel.

Meachem? The only thing I've heard about Meachem so far in this offseason is from Peter King's MMQB:
I think the rookie who's made the worst first impression in the three weeks since draft day, easily, is New Orleans wide receiver Robert Meachem. How on God's green earth can a rook be 19 pounds overweight at the team's first mini-camp? And what kinds of red flags must that send up to the coaching staff and front office about to make the man a jillionaire? "I think I had like nine [pre-draft] visits to teams,'' Meachem said after injuring an ankle at the Saints' minicamp last week. "And every visit they gave you a big old meal. I tried to work out when I could, but I don't think I got enough workouts in.'' Uh oh.

<edit> Oh, and he had a bum ankle early and now he has some issue with the medial meniscus in his right knee.

You must mean Stephen A. Smith.

Michael Smith is actually a very good young journalist. He always has some good inside information, and seems to approach things pragmatically and doesn't get pissy like Rhome and Cowherd (who approach their jobs as if being a comedian is at least half as important as being a sports journalist/commentator).

You are quite correct ... sorry I was flying through things yesterday... the man has to be the biggest contributor to global warming this world has... my gosh he can churn out the "hot" air. Michael Smith is a very good writer and I enjoy his work.

I don't mind Dan Patrick and will listen to Cowherd unless he's rambling on-and-on for hours saying the same thing, but when Rome is on I'll either change the channel or turn the radio off completely.

Unfortunately for the majority of us, the people in charge at ESPN Radio obviously think that people like listening to the pretentious drivel that someone like Rome puts out. They're still in that mindset that we all love the shock-jock and overly opinionated genre Howard Stern and Rush Limbaugh started. It's too bad they can't recognize the fact that most of us like to listen to sports news and educated discussions on what's going on.
