Technically, he's 2 time MVP (64 and 67) and 1 time Player of the Year (59).

But both awards were given by the AP and have the exact same value...

It's like if the Super Bowl were to be renamed to the Incredible Bowl in this season.

If the Packers won it, they would have 4 SBs and 1 IB. But it would still be the same game, just another name. And it would be the 14th title.

Championships and SBs are essencially the same.
pre-61 Player of the Year and MVP are EXACTLY the same but with a different name.

It's still AP voting the best player of the year.

We may not have been Super Bowl Champions, but we were World Champions and that is what today's Super Bowl Champions are. Unitas may not have been the Most Valuable Player (because that designation did not yet exist), but, as "Player of the Year" he was certainly the most valuable player. IMO.
I do recognize, however, that if it was the AP's award to give and they did not give it to Unitas, then he was not "Player of the Year" and thus not the most valuable player in that year.

Pretty close to the same situation. Only problem with the super bowl reference is that they had an NFL Championship game and then the Super Bowl for the first 4 years. With the MVP they just switched the name of the award. So I would say that is a little more clear than the "Championship". I would have to say it sure looks like they just changed the name. Now to go in depth one would have to look and see if the conditions for winning the award are the same or did they change those at the same time. That would be the most telling.

The Super Bowl was originally supposed to be a competition between the NFL and the AFL. When the two leagues merged the NFL became the NFC and the AFL became the AFC and together they became the NFL. Before Super Bowl 4 they were separate leagues, kind of like high school and college football. So they had separate awards/titles.
