I believe it's the first time Barnett was not the leader since he has been here.

I think how far Hawk and Poppinga progress from last year and improved play at the safety position will determine how much better overall our "D" will be this year.

The quality of play at LB is HUGE in this defense. I am really looking forward to watching them.

I think with a better safety we should be able to have a D which can keep up in games even with some fairly high powerd teams. Most likely out first round pick will be a RB or WR, so I which the team would have adressed the Safety issue with a free agent.

LMAO. Mike and Mike is amazing.

I am so glad Barnett is coming back. With him and Hawk acting as a tandem, I see only good things.

I think he will do even better this year, now that he is getting comfortable with everything. It's kind of like at osu, he did good at first but really turned things on when he settled in.

In a few more seasons we will be able to say that he is the most dominating LB in the division.

if the butcher ever progress to beat out popp.

they would then be the single most intimidating linebacking corp in the NFL.

the butcher, the ninja, and the hawk.

Hawk is a beast. If Poppinga and Hawk improve as much as they did during last season we'll have the best lb group in the NFL by the end of the year.

Hawk has all the tools, but I'd like to see him be more intuitive rather than reactive.

He displayed better anticipation as the season came to an end last year, and hopefully that'll continue.

Good rookie season though, certainly expecting big things from him this year.

I think Hawk will continue to improve, as he gets more pro expierience. I think he had a pretty darn good rookie year.

I was reading someplace this morning that the Saints had Hawk ranked second on there board last year and where going to select him with the second pick, but Bush was sitting there so they nabbed him. So actually we can thank Sherman indirectly for being part of the staff in Texas the didn't select Bush.

LOL.. Okay that is a reach, lol..

With Hawk and Poppinga improving Barnett won't be able to use the excuse of "covering up" for other players as an excuse for making tackles 4,5 or 6 yards behind the line of scrimmage. I hope he gets better at keeping the play in front of him. If Barnett does that with Hawk and Poppinga's improvement this could be an exciting LB corps to watch.

Barnett is never going to be that hole plugging MLB, he plays to high for that. He is a fast LB with better than average instincts, he needs the D line to eat up the blocks. But he can play sideline to sideline, that to me is why getting KGB out on running plays is so important. Barnett does take on Oline blocks very well, so KGB and Barnett get shallowed up and they rip that side of the line up. Hence when Jenkins shifted over, the D had huge improvements in the run. Jenkins held the point and Barnett and Hawk were free, Jenks would eat up a blocker and chip another olineman.

This is why I am excited about the D this year, we are stout up front with depth and "fast" LB. We are a safety or two away in my opinion, of course barring injuries.

My other concern is pass rush, but hopefully a fresh KGB can give us a lift there.

I agree. I think we'll see the game "slow down" for him this year as he improves his ability to sense the play as opposed to following and reacting to it. That's kind of the line I think Barnett has still to cross, being in the hole to stop it instead of making the tackle when the play gets to him or over-running the play because it cuts back behind his pursuit.

If Hawk does that and also improves in the pass coverage area, we may be looking at a playmaker on defense that makes it to the "elite" level instead of just being very good.

I'll tell you..............i haven't been this excited about our "D" in quite awhile! And the nice thing is, most of the guys are young, and if we can keep the team together, it can become a real strong point.

I am too Cheese. The defense has been built up at the expense of the offense, but I couldn't stand the kind of football we were playing in '03 and '04 anyway. We could outscore the weak sisters, but when a team like Philly would come punch us in the mouth, we would buckle. We are starting to see a team with some punch, and I like it. If we get our ground game on offense, we will be a fomidable team next year.

I know! I think our O felt like it had to score every time it had the ball. Thats way too much pressure on it. A good D can let your O relax and play it's game. They don't have to feel like it's imperative to score, or your game is lost. That makes the OTHER team feel the constant pressure.
Plus like Allabout says, we still have the draft, and who knows what TT has up his sleeve? (Besides his arms i mean!!!) :rotflmao:

Generally when you think something is going to be good it usually disappoints. My guess is the offense is top 5 in the league and defense bottom 5. That just seems to be how it is sometimes. :rotflmao:

I'm with you though. I do like the potential this Defense has for next season. Especially at Corner and the front seven.

I agree, all about da packers.

Picking a CB and S in the mix of the draft would supplement the D nicely.
