Those old enough to have seen him play or knowledgeable about Packers history will know Dave "Hawg"Hanner, who died this past week at his home in Florida at age 78.
Hanner had over a 40 year association with the Packers. For 10 seasons he was an all-pro def. tackle and played with Willie Davis and Hank Jordan on the d-lines that won the early championships in the 1960's under Vince Lombardi.
After retiring as a player in '64 Hanner stayed on as an assistant coach for another 16 years. He was d-line coach for Lombardi, Phil Bengsten and coordinator for Dan Devine and Bart Starr and quality assurance coach for Starr and Forrest Gregg before joining the Packers scouting department; where he continued until retirement in 1996.
Hanner is the only person who can claim significant presence from the Lombardi dynasty to the Ron Wolf/Mike Holmgren success run to Super Bowl XXXI.
"Hawg" was also a colorful and beloved personality. For more information go to packersnews.com.
