Many spent the last decade damning the old guy for making some bad decisions with the Raiders, but he was not a dumb man, that's for sure. Everyone has wears and tears over time in experience. You can only be on top for so long.

It wouldn't surprise me if every team had a story or two with a connection to Al Davis.

Football is the game it is todayin part because of Al Davis. John Madden, Jon Gruden and scores of others owe their carers to Al Davis. Too many people, especially young people only see the surface of the last 15 years. I think the way those who know him have spoken about him says it all. You don't often hear Jerry Jones cry on the phone.
