Looks like the bears signed Cutler to a long term contract. Thoughts?

It was the right move. Jay Cutler is a tremendous talent even at this point in his career. Surround him with some better talent and coach him more aggressively and he could be a very effective quarterback. He just needs to lose the superman mindset that has infected a lot of quarterbacks of late.

It's 7 more years that they'll be settling for a fringe franchise quarterback rather than going out and finding a real one. So, I'm glad for that.

The only thing that makes this a bad move for the bears is the amount of money they are paying him, over 17.6 million a year? For Cutler? Seriously? This is a lot like the Flacco contract, they are paying a guy top tier QB money when he is 2nd tier as best. There are only 4 top tier QB's in the league at this time, Rodgers, Manning, Brees, Brady. Those are the only 4 guys worth of top level pay. everyone else should not be making more than 15 a year and Cutler pretty much falls right smack dab in the middle of the 2nd tier of NFL QB's.

I haven't heard the financials on the contract, but $18M a year wouldn't be too surprising. $50M+ in guaranteed money would be a little more surprising as that would put him pretty close to Rodgers there, but I guess when you have Matt Ryan getting $59M in guarantees and Flacco $52M, nothing is really surprising.

$18M+ is just the going rate for second rate QB's like Cutler, Romo, Stafford, Flacco, etc. (Flacco may not even be on that 2nd tier IMO).

That's what makes the Rodgers contract a steal, really. Would you rather have Flacco at $20.1M a year for the most important position on the team,, or Rodgers for less than $2M a year more? Even most Raven fans in their right minds would want Rodgers for that.

As a bonus, this should provide the writers of "The League" enough material to go strong for at least another 5 years.

Contract is for seven years, $126 million with $54 million guaranteed.

THAT'S INSANE!!! Maybe I should be glad about having a GM like TT more often.

The word is the Bears and Cutler were a few million apart. The Packers became concerned and offered to pay the difference so that Cutler could continue playing for Chicago.

Wow, ummm if I was a Bears fan I'd be like WTF, they fired Smith last year then sign Cutler for 7 more, its almost like breaking a mirror. As a Packers fan, can only hope he keeps up the great work against the Pack.

Tremendous talent? LOL, that's what Denver said when they drafted him. Then they quickly realized he was nothing more than Jeff George Part II. Then Chicago was dumb enough to give up 2 1st rd draft picks for him. Jay has 8 years in this league, making the playoffs a total of 1 time, and only 2 of those years having a winning record. Tremendous talents do better than that.

Can this thread be moved over to the "Other NFL Teams" sub-forum where it belongs? It's mucking up the part of the forum where discussion of real football takes place.

Consider the Chicago teams he played on that's not surprising. He had what was once talked up as one of the worst O-lines in league history. Is he a tremendous physical talent, absolutely. Better coaching and he'll be very productive.

LOL, that was the Denver Broncos excuse... "He played on bad teams". When are people going to stop drinking the kool-aid and just admit he's a bust. He finally had a defense with Chicago and he still plays like a backup. The Bears just might be in the playoffs today if McCown had finished the season.

He was very good with the Broncos teams he played on. Those teams didn't play defense.

Is he a true elite quarterback, no. But calling him a bust... the Derp is strong in this one.
